John has expertise treating trauma, anxiety disorders, OCD, depression, somatic symptom and chronic pain struggles, especially as they overlap with trauma. This work is rooted deeply in evidence-based practice, where he incorporates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), CBT-based psychotherapies, and formal and informal exposure-focused techniques.
He completed his doctoral training at Utah State University in a Combined Clinical/Counseling Psychology PhD program, which has moved him towards a therapeutic style that allows for strongly authentic connection and support, while also motivating healing behavioral change uniquely tailored for a client’s personal values.
Internship
Through the use of ACT in combination with a trauma-informed framework, John explores a client’s relationship with their own difficult internal experiences as an effort to determine how their reactions to distress are interfering with who they want to be. Renegotiating this relationship with one’s internal world plays a central role in therapy. These efforts are further supported with connection across difference, through the exploration of upbringing, socialization, and unique cultural experiences that have set the stage for a client’s struggles, as well as for their resilience and individuality.
John’s sessions are meaningful and challenging, yet often playful through expression of humor and discussion of the natural sufferings of humanness that afflict us all. Stigma is lovingly challenged at every opportunity within the room, and therapy often cultivates increased self-understanding, compassion, and fun.
The unique mission of UCEBT is to improve the quality of mental health care by enhancing access to comprehensive evidence-based treatments, evaluations, and testing.
