Health Anxiety

Health anxiety involves excessive and persistent worry about one’s health and physical symptoms.  Individuals may worry or wonder if they are seriously ill, even if there is no real health or physical concern or a doctor has ruled out medical causes.  When people become overly fixated on health or normal body sensations, they interpret them as signs of major illness.  They may go to the doctor repeatedly, get unnecessary or redundant medical tests, or avoid medical care out of fear that it may reveal something.

Common Symptoms

  • Persistent worry about having a serious illness
  • Frequently checking symptoms or seeking reassurance
  • Avoidance of medical appointments
  • Anxiety related to physical sensations or symptoms
