Understanding Employee Assistance Programs (EAP)
Working with UCEBT for Your Employees’ Mental Health
An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides employees with access to confidential mental health support, helping them manage stress, emotional challenges, and life transitions.
For employers, EAPs support workforce wellbeing, reduce burnout and absenteeism, and promote a healthier, more engaged workplace culture.
EAP services commonly include short-term counseling, mental health consultations, referrals for ongoing care, and support for concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and workplace challenges. Some programs also offer support for life transitions, grief, and crisis situations.
Here at the Utah Center for Evidence Based Treatment, EAP services are grounded in evidence-based practices and delivered by highly-trained clinicans. Depending on employee needs, services may include therapy, skills-based interventions, and assistance with diagnostic clarification to help guide appropriate next steps for care.
It usually depends on the season. Many people find that therapy is most needed during the holidays and the winter months. The lowest season is generally in the summer. However, we’ve found that more employees usually take advantage of our services when they have seen us in other capacities in the workplace (e.g., workplace trainings, workshops, and group sessions).
We work with the employer depending on their unique business structure to ensure confidentiality of employees who use our services.
For example, employees could go through the company’s HR department to get connected with us; when we bill the company, we de-identify the employee’s information (e.g., by using a number instead of their name). In this type of situation, we don’t need a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) signed because we are not exchanging any protected health information (PHI).
However, some companies’ wellness programs require PHI to be shared in order to pay for services; in these cases, the company would need to sign a BAA for us to share this information.
Mental health concerns can significantly impact concentration, decision-making, communication, and overall job performance. EAPs help address these challenges early by providing employees with tools, coping strategies, and professional support.
Organizations that offer EAPs often see improved morale, reduced turnover, fewer unplanned absences, and stronger employee engagement. By supporting employees through periods of stress, transition, or difficulty, an EAP serves as a proactive investment in both individual wellbeing and long-term organizational effectiveness.

Employees typically access EAP services through a straightforward process established by their employer, such as contacting the provider directly or using a dedicated referral link or phone number. The goal is to remove barriers and make support easy to access, even during stressful or time-sensitive situations.
UCEBT offers both virtual and in-person options when available, allowing employees to choose the format that best fits their needs. Timely access to care is prioritized so employees can receive meaningful support as early as possible, rather than waiting until challenges become more disruptive.
Utah Center for Evidence Based Treatment has deep clinical experience working with individuals in high-stress, high-responsibility roles, including first responders, medical personnel, U.S. service members, veterans, and other high-demand professions.
Many of our clinicians have clinical backgrounds working with the VA, healthcare systems, and fire departments. Our clinicians have also provided workplace training programs for first responders, hospital staff, and fellow mental health providers who provide care for these professions.
In fact, our CEO completed her postdoctoral training at the Salt Lake City VA, specializing in PTSD, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and trauma-related conditions. Our Anxiety and Mood Program Director is certified as trained in Military-Focused Care through STAR Behavioral Health Providers. Our DBT clinicians have specialized expertise in treating chronic suicidality, and our DBT Program Director also provides QPR suicide prevention trainings.
UCEBT clinicians are trained in a wide range of evidence-based treatments commonly needed by high-demand professionals, including EMDR (with options for EMDR intensives for faster symptom relief), Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) program.
We also have expertise in treating over-control and perfectionistic personality styles, including Type A traits, as well as Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
In addition, our clinicians have experience working with ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people navigating racial stress and trauma.
We approach care with cultural humility, clinical rigor, and a strong understanding of the cumulative stress, moral injury, and identity pressures that often accompany high-demand professions. Our goal is to provide practical, evidence-based care that respects the realities of these roles while supporting long-term resilience, recovery, and performance.
There are several factors that can affect the rates. It usually depends on the number of employees in attendance and the experience level of the psychologist(s) hosting the workshops. We can work with you to determine a set contractual rate and customize the rate to fit your company’s unique needs.

It’s up to the employer how they’d like to handle no shows. Some employers cover no shows and others do not. Some employers only cover no shows when it’s work-related (e.g., covering a last minute shift) and have their employees pay the rate of missing a session when it’s not work related. At our center, we have a 24-hour cancellation policy so any cancelations less than that (including no shows) will be required to pay the full session rate.
Some employers cover 100% of the session with a number of sessions allocated for the employers. Other employers use a tiered system. For example, session 1-10 employees pay $0; sessions 11-20 employees pay $40; sessions 21-30 employees pay $75… and so on until the full rate.
It is up to the employer to determine the renewal timeframe (e.g., if the sessions reset each year or if it’s on-going). If there is no renewal of sessions, then we recommend providing a small number of employer-paid maintenance sessions to make sure that employees can continue to have access to services once they’ve maxed out their benefits. This way, employees are not discouraged to use their mental health benefits when they need it because of the cost.
