Exposure Therapy helps people overcome fears, anxieties, and worries. In exposure therapy, individuals gradually and safely face the situation or thing they fear in small, controlled steps. By gradually confronting fears, clients build resilience by learning that it’s not as scary or dangerous as you think, you are capable of doing difficult things, and that the fear and anxiety will decrease over time.
For example, if someone is afraid of spiders, they might start by thinking about spiders, then looking at pictures of spiders, then watching videos of spiders, then seeing a spider in real life, and eventually touching a spider.
The goal is to confront the fear in a way that feels manageable so that overtime anxiety reduces, confidence grows, and the brain realizes that the feared thing isn’t actually harmful. Consent is paramount and you are always in charge of deciding what you do and when. You will never be asked to do anything that is actually dangerous or unsafe.
This therapy is ideal for individuals with phobias, panic disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) who want to reduce avoidance behaviors and regain control over their anxiety.
The unique mission of UCEBT is to improve the quality of mental health care by enhancing access to comprehensive evidence-based treatments, evaluations, and testing.
