Narcissism and Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) are frequently referenced in popular culture, yet rarely discussed in context of diagnostic criteria, treatment options, or clinical prognosis.

This lecture will present a brief overview of the history of this diagnosis, as well as considerations for assessment and treatment of narcissistic traits and self care for those working or interacting with people who meet criteria for this diagnosis. Recent research and practice recommendations pertinent to this population from the 2021 APA convention will be reviewed.

An overview of the APA guidelines for appropriate and ethical self care will be presented, as well as practical considerations for implementation.

About This Training

At the conclusion of the presentation, attendees should be able to describe the diagnostic criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder, understand the difference between narcissistic traits and personality disorder, and describe several possible treatment directions. Attendees will consider their own self care plans and weigh pros and cons of working professionally with this population and be able to describe recent practice recommendations from the APA annual conference.
 
  1. Describe history relevant history of diagnosis.
  2. Differentiate between the presence of narcissistic traits and the DSM-V diagnosis of NPD
  3. List assessment measures for NPD
  4. List several options for treatment of NPD
  5. Describe the risks and benefits of working with clients with NPD
  6. List several self care strategies consistent with ethical practice
 

About the Presenters

Robin Lange, Ph.D., counseling psychology. Dr. Lange received her doctoral training at the University of Denver where her research and clinical training focused on the assessment and treatment of trauma and group psychotherapy. She completed the PTSD focused Postdoctoral Fellowship at the SLC VA Medical Center where she focused her training on complex trauma presentations. She is intensively trained in DBT, and has completed specialty training in EMDR, chronic pain, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and psychodynamic psychotherapy modalities. She has focused on the clinical treatment of Narcissistic traits since 2006 when she began her work with faculty and administrators of major university medical systems.

Dr. Lange’s clinical practice areas include the treatment of adults with developmental trauma, chronic medical conditions, multiple treatment failures, and personality disorder. Dr. Lange directs the Utah Center for Evidence Based Treatment, PLLC where her administrative work focuses on the mentorship and professional development of psychologists.
